Subject: [*] ClipSave package
ClipSave is a utility to save the contents of the Clipboard
when you restart your Mac. In other words, the contents of the
Clipboard never go away. I wrote this package because I had a
need to save the Clipboard, and I didn't know of anything other
programs that did so.
Legalish stuff:
The author, Russ Nelson, is not responsible for anything done by
this program. Use at your own risk. It has been tested
somewhat, but no guarantees are made.
The ClipSave package is free, but it's not public domain. This
means that you can give it to anyone you want, but you can't
charge money for it without prior written authorization from the
author, and the distribution must include the entire package.
The ClipSave package is WhateverWare. If you like it, send me a
postcard or some money, or donate to your favorite charity, or
bake some brownies, or call your grandmother, or whatever.
Hence the name.

Subject: [*] FileMaker_Contacts+2.0.hqx
CONTACTS+ is a `pseudo-shareware' Filemaker Pro (version 1.x) database. It's
main purpose is to allow proper address details to appear (even when some
components of the address are omitted such as the organization, country
etc...)
in Microsoft Word print-merge documents. Other than that, you should find
that CONTACTS+ is just about as powerful and usable as any other
`commercial' Contacts database/manager.
When exporting print-merge data, the FullAddress field would replace all the
individual fields that make up the receipient's address. You should also
export
the title, firstname and lastname fields, to be used in the greeting line, ie
Dear
[title] [firstname] [lastname]... Other fields do not have to be exported.
Plea: If you feel that CONTACTS+ has some useful
value and use it; and want to encourage me to improve my existing `products'
and develop other `affordable & useful' databases; and want to receive future
updates via email (personally sent by me); please Register yourself by sending
me a bank money order/draft payable to: Andrew Lee, or any currency; for
Any amount that you think is appropriate. All registered users will receive
(via
internet mail) the user's password that allows you to create or modify
layouts.
Please enclose a fax or internet email address so that I may be able to get in
touch with you instantly in the future.
Please do not distribute Contacts+ without all the original materials,
especially
this file. Contacts+ is not for commercial re-sale without my knowledge and
permission. Please inform me if you decide to place Contacts+ onto commercial

This allows you to have a popup menu anywhere on a card with or without any

This version adds support for the use of the special formatting metacharacters

13 January 1993
This Compactor Pro archive contains the source code need to build version
2.5.2 of Macintosh Ghostscript that runs on a Macintosh with at least
2 Megabytes of memory. Because it does *not* contain the Ghostscript
fonts, you must also obtain and unarchive MacGS_2.5.x_Runtime.cpt to
obtain a testable development environment.
This implemention does not require 32-bit Color QuickDraw and should
run under both System 6 and System 7. It should even run on black-
and-white displays (!).
This version does not presuppose a 68020 or better processor, nor does
it presuppose the existence of a 68881 FPU. (Because the previous
versions were made on a Mac IIci, the associated projects were built
with this hardware configuration in mind.)

Subject: Apple 16# monitor & CI & VX
Many thanks to the netters who replied to our query about the Apple
16#
Monitors:
We have just acquired several of these monitors, driven the
Apple endorsed E-machines DoubleColor 8 bit video card.
When The screen has a long (most of the screen width) line of text in
an application such as TeachText or Word, there is significant distortion
toward the right side of the monitor, which could be described as
"scalloping". Vertical lines, such as the edges of the text
window, becomes wiggly in a scallopped manner, as does the text itself.
We have found that the problem occurs with Mac CI, and VX, but does
not seem to occur with Mac CX. The several folks who responded to our original
query suggested that the distortion might be caused by adjacent monitors or
other sources of electric or magnetic fields. We tried sevral locations, AND
found that if we ONLY swap the box from a CI to a CX, with NO other changes,
the problem is related to the CX in some way. We also tried several DIFFERENT
CI boxes, and the results were consistent. No one else reported having the
problem, but no one had the same configuration. So now a slightly different
form of the question:
Has anyone sucessfully used an apple 16# monitor with the E-machines 8 bit
Video board in a CI or a VX?
Thanks for the help already given and yet to come.

Okay, I've only noticed this happening when I run Word, and it doesn't
happen all the time, but when it *does* happen it's rather annoying because
it almost always seems to happen when I'm in a hurry.
Does anyone know what the deal is with Word 5.x occassionally either just
plain quitting in the middle of something, or not even successfully loading
because of a "Type 1 Error"?
Usually I've been able to get around this by just shutting down my Mac (an
LC with 10mb RAM) for a little bit and then coming back. But it is starting
to really annoy me.
Any clues, anyone?

If you can spare the money, I'd reccomend Endnote. It works as a PIM (plug
in Module) in word 5. In Word 5 you can format citations, and create a
bibliography without leaving Word. It also works with any file with a XTND
translator.
I has a DOS/windoze version (the mac was the first). Niles has an online
presence, and people interested in endnote have a listserv discussion list
(send mail to LISTSERV@UCSBVM.BITNET with body, Subscribe ENDNOTE). I don't
see the demo on infomac, but there is a copy on the endnote archive I've
set-up: magic.ucsb.edu. The demo is the stand alone application, and does
not include the plug in module. The Word plug-in is the same as the
application, plus the ability to format citations, and create a
bibliography without leaving Word.

Subject: Comment on software pricing policies
Sirs:
I read with interest the messages concerning the pricing policies of
American software companies in the European market. I fail to under-
stand the logic of some of these companies, if they sell their products
in the European market with double the price of the home market.
In many other countries, domestic companies charge higher prices in
the home market. They use the cash flow generated in the home market to
finance their international expansion. It looks like some software compa-
nies are doing just the opposite. They compete themselves near to death in
the home market, and in order to survive, they do their best to alienate
their foreign customers.
To me, it looks like it still hasn't dawned to some American software
companies why the Japanese, Germans, and Koreans beat American industries
with hands down in their home market. If this trend continues, my prediction
is that some of these companies may be looking forward to a similar destiny
as General Motors, RCA, and Chevrolet.
PS I understand a reasonable price increase, if the product has to be custo-
mized. This comment is with regard to uncustomized products.

Yes. SCSI is SCSI. There are two good ways:
--Get Syquest's DOS Software (called "SY-DOS" in the US--NOT to be
confused with SY-TOS) and their controller card.
--Get a Trantor SCSI-to-parallel port adapter and use its software; I
think Trantor directly supports the Syquest now.
Another consideration: if the device is ASPI-compatible, you can use any
ASPI-compatible controller. Many are.

I'm in the market for both a DTP program and a money management

(I have a stack of MacUsers and MacWorld which see to be having no
chance of getting read in the near future).
I have been looking at Publish It Easy 3.0 (I saw a nice demo yesterday
at Seattle dBUG -- lots of useful features plus a few dubious "kitchen
sink" features (slide show and so on). Their idea of publishing on CD
ROM (with a lot of extract stuff thrown in for no extra money) is an
interesting one.
Aldus' Personal Press. I looked at this one a while back and decided it
was the best of the crop, but never purchased it. Seemed to be better
integrated for the infrequent user (thumbnail sketches).
So which products are you using? Do you like its feature set? Does it
have any annoying quirks (I'll be running these on a Plus, so speed is
not unimportant)? What other products shoud I be considering? Are Aldus
preparing an upgrade?
I run a (very) small consulting/software development business (in
addition to my real job!) So far for money management I have only
really looked at Quicken. I am interested by it ability to export to
MacinTax (are any other sole proprietors using this combination?). Any
other suggestions?
Hope these don't seem like dumb questions. I'm more at home using MPW

As a confirmed font addict, I love sifting through the DEVELOP CD looking
for the latest foreign fonts to make it to the TrueType format. Some of
these raise a question: Since I don't want to turn my Mac into a Hebrew
Mac, Kanji Mac, etc. just to use the fonts, is there any way to get the
necessary character handling functionality with a minimum of fuss? For
Hebrew, Arabic, and their relatives, the TrueType characters are easy
enough, but without a right-to-left version of something like TeachText,
they're pretty painful to use. The cp's and ex's and such in the
international system versions look interesting, but don't seem
straightforward to use without fully installing the foreign system version.
The asian systems are even worse! To accomodate the complex character
sets, the concept of a "font" seems to have been completely reinvented. Am
I missing something? Thanks.

Yes. NUM 2.0 has all of the features of SUM, except that it doesn't
have all of the volume information files (.VIFs) which SUM came with.
This is, at least officially, because there are so many different drives

Subject: Now Startup Manager and 7.1
I upgraded to System 7.1 on both a IIci and a IIsi running very similar
extensions and other things. Everything worked beautifully on my IIci, but I
had a whole lot of problems with the IIsi. When extensions began to load,
the machine told me that two copies of AppleShare were in my system and to
remove one of them. It then said the same thing about File Sharing
Extension. As the icons rolled across the screen, some appeared twice. Some
of these were X-d out but not all of them. When it finished displaying all
of the icons, the machine froze. I was able to start up without problems if
I blocked the loading of the extensions. I ultimately saved in another
folder everything that wasn't from Apple, threw out the Apple System 7.1
material, and recreated it from my floppy disks. Everything then worked
smootly but one the second or third restart, the same problem appeared. I
noticed that the first icon to appear twice was Now Utilities Startup Manager
so I removed it from my Control Panel folder, and now everything appears to
work without problems. Thus, there appears to be a conflict between Startup
Manager and something that causes System 7.1 to crash. What's strange is
that this doesn't happen on my other system. Has anyone else seen this sort
of problem? Please respond via e-mail as I often don't monitor this
newsgroup. Thanks.

>over the network.
Yes. There is a LocalTalk device called the PowerSwitch LT that is a power
outlet and ADB port controllable through AppleTalk commands.
This may (or may not) be way too big a hammer for the stated question.
I don't remember the original context for the question, but if it's
enough just to be able to restart or shutdown, but not power up, then
using QuickKeys and apple events can easily get you this.
Also, there are various devices to hook to modems to power up your
computer when you call in; this in conjunction with ARA may do what
you need.
Still, sometimes you need a hammer, and this sounds like a useful
device. The problem with using apple events to shut down or reboot
is that applications may refuse to exit (as, for example, when you
have modified documents that need to be saved), or the system may
be wedged. Or turned off (after a power failure, for example).
For true unattended operation, your LocalTalk device could be a very
useful, if big, hammer. But first I'd recommend always trying to
shutdown/restart via apple events first, and then resorting to
the bigger hammer if that doesn't work.

>Just wondering where Snooper ranks compared to Norton Utilities 2.0

It's like comparing apples to oranges!! ;-)
Snooper is a HARDWARE diagnostic; NU/MacTools are SOFTWARE diagnostics.
Snooper is supposed to be able to help you track down a hardware failure
by testing the various subsystems (video, RAM, ADB, SCSI, etc.) and the
Snooper package with diagnostic board helps test for power supply
problems. I have the Snooper+board package and I haven't had many
chances to use it (I used to have a lot of hardware problems, which
prompted me to get Snooper; since I've gotten it, I haven't had
hardly any problems! :-O)
The other two handles diagnostics from primarily a software point-of-view.
They analyze directory structure, file corruption, file bundle resources,
volume information, hierarchy and other SW-related problems. They could
"loosely" be called a hardware diagnostic in that they check for bad
blocks on the disk you're analyzing, but that about the extent of it.
The other major competition that Snooper has in the HW diagnostic field
is MacEKG. I heard recently of another one called "Peace of Mind".
There is a demo at sumex:/info-mac/demo/peace-of-mind-lite.hqx.
Hope this helps! :-)

Sure. For the currently released products:
Enabler # Macintosh name

111 Macintosh PowerBook 160, 180
201 Macintosh PowerBook Duo 210, 230

Subject: Unreliable foppy drive in SE/30
There are a couple of common problems with floppy drives. If a disk
is formatted in a DD drive, but can't be read by a HD drive, the
first thing to do is check to see what kind of disk it is. If it is
a HD disk, as evinced by the two holes in the corners (vs 1 in DD),
and possibly HD printed somewhere, then put a piece of tape over the
hole without the plastic "lock" switch. Voila! The HD drive now
reads the floppy. It's important NOT to try to format this as a HD
disk now, because it is no longer reliable as such.
The second common problem is dirty heads. For an "Older" machine,
dirt has built up in the drive. The best bet is to get one of those
disk drive cleaning kits and clean your heads. For years, I thought
that this was just a hoax, but cleaning the head on an old SE in our
lab was a miracle. It used to format disks that couldn't be read by
anyone else, and other disks absolutely refused to work on it.
Cleaning the head took care of it! I read about this in Larry Pina's
great book, "The Dead Mac Scrolls", which gives you possible
solutions to carious hardware problems, and even shows you how to
align the read/write head on a messed up floppy drive!

This is becoming a FAQ...

From: daloyd@ufcc.ufl.edu
Hello, I'm sorry to bother you with such a strange question, but I believe
that you mentioned in the InfoMac Digest that there was a copy of
everything
necessary for Japanese WorldScript usage (TrueType fonts as well?) in the
Nov/Dec Developer's CD-ROM.
Dev.CD Nov/Dec 92:System Software:WorldScript:WorldScript II:Japanese
contain the Japanese stuff; there's a couple of extensions and a file
of instructions in the WorldScript II.
However, I've had reports of it not being there. In particular,
it may be that there is a special Japan version that lacks this.
(This would reflect very poorly an Apple Japan's support of developers
if it's true, I think). Or perhaps only the ones mailed directly to
registered developers (but still named the same).
If anyone can explain the discrepancy, please do.
I have this CD, but, with hours of searching, can't find anything remotely
related to WorldScript. I am wondering if you could possible give the the
me the path to the folder which it is all in? (Or paths, I am not sure.)
Does
this CD also include KanjiTalk 7.1? Doubtful, I suppose.
Well, if by KanjiTalk 7.1 you mean the input support, there's a
new input interface called Koteri, which is certainly easier to
use. I don't know if it has improved dictionaries and syntactic
analysis, but it certainly works more smoothly. (Unfortunately,
all the help and menus related to the input stuff are in Japanese,
which is going to be a real problem for a lot of US developers
who aren't fluent enough to handle such material. I can get by,
and perhaps could answer a few questions if I don't get flooded,
but I haven't the time to do a translation, since I'm going to
Japan in a few days.)
Thank you VERY much for you time.
Oh, sorry, one more thing, do you know of any ShareWare Japanese TrueType
fonts, other than those which may be on the CD? Thanks.
No, I don't. The font on the CD is Kyoto, and I don't like it.
It appears to be totally unhinted, and looks really bad at any
small sizes other than the ones for which there are explicit
bitmaps. The bitmaps are usable down to 10 point (or is it 9?)
but are unaesthetic and sometimes difficult to read in the smaller
sizes. In between the bitmap sizes, where the truetype font is
used, they are often unreadable. (Native Japanese can often
understand these undistinguishable blobs from context, but I'm
still aquiring that skill). Don't get me wrong; it's a big
improvement; just don't set your expectation too high for it
on the screen in arbitrary sizes.
Printing should be adaquate, but I sure would prefer a non-fixed-width
stroke font. A lot more aesthetic, readable, and besides it would
help educate me in the correct way to draw them.
(It sure beats the KanjiTalk 6 "postscript" fonts).
I guess I'll have a look at the other fonts in Japan.

Subject: WORM CD-ROM revisited
One week ago I posted a request for information concerning the experience
of others with WORM CD-ROMs. To date I received one response asking me
what I learned. Not much is the answer. Once I again I would like to ask
do any info-mac netters have any experience with WORM CD-ROMs? I am
especially interested in the Kodak product. Thanks for any information and
time spent in responding. Blystone in Texas
